Do hashtags work on TikTok?
Yes, but they're a small signal. TikTok counts the hashtags on a video among the details its For You feed reads, along with the caption and sound, and it weighs what viewers do, such as watching to the end, much more. Since August 2025 many accounts can add at most five hashtags to a post.

What TikTok says about hashtags
TikTok explains how its recommendations work in its newsroom and its Transparency Center. Four points matter for hashtags:
- Video details count. TikTok lists "video information", such as captions, sounds and hashtags, among the factors behind each For You feed. Its Transparency Center names the hashtags on a video as one of the signals it takes into account.
- What viewers do counts more. TikTok says a strong sign of interest, such as someone finishing a longer video, gets more weight than a weak one.
- Followers aren't a direct factor. TikTok says neither your follower count nor your past hits are direct factors in what it recommends. A bigger account still tends to get more views, simply because more people follow it.
- Viewers can filter tags out. People can add words or hashtags to a filter, and videos that use them won't show in their For You feed.
So hashtags help TikTok understand what your video is about and who might want it. They don't make a video spread on their own. A tag that doesn't match the video can even work against you: it shows the video to people who swipe away, and that's a weak signal.
The five-hashtag limit
From August 2025, TikTok users began seeing a message that a post can have at most five hashtags. Social Media Today reported it, and TikTok didn't give an official explanation at the time. TikTok's help centre doesn't mention the limit, and it isn't clear whether every account has it. If you see the message, the post won't take a sixth tag.
You don't need a way around it. Five well-chosen tags cover a video. Anything else you want TikTok to know belongs in the caption, in plain words, because TikTok reads captions too.
How to choose hashtags that help
- Say what's in the video. Write one plain sentence: what happens, and who it's for. Your tags should describe that sentence.
- Mix the groups. Use one broad tag for the subject, two niche tags for the community that cares about it and two specific tags for this exact video. For a first sourdough loaf that might be #baking, #sourdoughbaking, #breadtok, #firstsourdough and #sourdoughstarter.
- Check each tag in the app. Tap it and look at the recent videos. If they look like yours, it fits. If they're spam or about something else, drop it.
- Skip trending tags that don't match. A popular tag puts your video in front of people who aren't looking for it. They swipe, and TikTok learns the wrong lesson about your video.
- Write the caption for people. Use the words someone would type to find your video, in a normal sentence. That also helps people who read the caption before they decide to watch.
The generator below is set to TikTok. Describe your video and it gives you up to five tags in broad, niche and specific groups, cleaned so each one works when you paste it. The tags are written by AI, so check them in the app before you post.

Open the full toolRules of thumb you'll see
You'll find plenty of "rules" online: the 3-3-3 rule, three tags only, always add #fyp. None of them comes from TikTok. The 3-3-3 rule usually means three broad, three niche and three specific tags, which is already more than five. Tags like #fyp or #foryou describe the feed, not your video, so they say nothing about who your video is for.
What TikTok does say is consistent: it looks at the whole video, its details and how people respond to it. Spend your effort on the first few seconds and a clear caption, and use hashtags to label the video honestly.

Questions
Do hashtags actually help on TikTok?
A little. TikTok lists hashtags among the video details its recommendations use, along with captions and sounds. What viewers do, such as watching to the end, counts for more.
What is the 5 hashtag rule on TikTok?
Since August 2025 many TikTok users have been told they can add at most five hashtags to a post. TikTok hasn't published the limit in its help centre, so treat five as the most you can use, not a number to hit.
Has TikTok put a limit on hashtags?
Yes, for many accounts: users have reported a five-hashtag limit since August 2025. TikTok hasn't said in its help centre whether it applies to everyone.
How do I get around TikTok's 5 hashtag limit?
There's no reliable way, and you don't need one. Put the extra words in your caption as plain text: TikTok reads captions too, and a clear sentence reads better than a block of tags.
What is the 3-3-3 hashtag rule?
It isn't a TikTok rule. Guides use the name for different tips, often three broad, three niche and three specific tags. On TikTok that's more than five, so use it as a way to think about the mix.
