What is VietQR?

VietQR is Vietnam's standard bank QR code, run by NAPAS, the national payment company. You get your own VietQR code in your banking app, and anyone with a Vietnamese banking app can scan it to send you money through NAPAS's instant transfer service.

What VietQR is

NAPAS runs the VietQR service: the network that connects banks and payment providers so a QR code from one bank can be paid from another bank's app. According to NAPAS, VietQR codes follow the State Bank of Vietnam's base standard, and the service works in merchant-presented mode. That means the person being paid shows the code and the payer scans it.

Like most national payment codes, VietQR is built on the EMVCo standard for payment QR codes. The code is a short line of text with fields for the scheme, the receiving bank and account, the currency (Vietnamese dong), sometimes an amount and a message, and a checksum at the end.

There are a few names you'll see:

  • VietQR: the QR code standard and the transfers it starts.
  • VietQRPay: NAPAS's name for paying at shops with VietQR, with payment confirmation and refunds for the shop. In October 2026 NAPAS said 45 banks and payment providers had joined.
  • VietQRGlobal: paying across borders, so visitors can pay in Vietnam with apps from home.
  • VietQRCash: taking cash out of an ATM with your banking app instead of a card.

How to get your VietQR code

Your VietQR code holds your bank and account number, so it comes from your bank:

  1. Open your banking app and look for the QR option, usually called "My QR", "Receive money" or similar.
  2. Pick the account you want to be paid into.
  3. Add an amount and a message if you want a code for one payment. Leave them empty for a code you can use every day.
  4. Save or share the code. Many apps let you save it as an image to print.

Before you print it, send yourself a small amount from a different bank's app, and check that the name on the payment screen is yours.

How to pay with VietQR

  1. Open your banking app and choose scan or QR.
  2. Point the camera at the code, or pick a saved image of it.
  3. Check the recipient name, account and amount the app shows. Type the amount if the code has none.
  4. Confirm with your PIN, fingerprint or face.

The money goes as a NAPAS 247 transfer, which NAPAS describes as real time, at any hour. NAPAS lists the limit as under 500 million dong per transaction; your bank may set a lower daily limit.

VietQR for foreigners: VietQRGlobal

If you're visiting Vietnam, you may not need a Vietnamese bank account. Under VietQRGlobal, NAPAS links its QR network with other countries' networks, so a visitor can scan a VietQR code at an accepting shop with a bank or e-wallet app from home. In October 2026 NAPAS listed six countries: Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, China, Singapore and South Korea, with more planned.

Not every shop accepts VietQRGlobal. Look for the logos at the till, and check your own app's cross-border fees and exchange rate before you pay.

Can you make a VietQR code online?

Many websites offer to generate a VietQR code from a bank name and account number. Some are useful, but none of them is NAPAS, and a wrong field means the payment fails or, worse, goes to the wrong account. Our rule for payment codes is that we only build a generator once its output matches the scheme's own published examples, byte for byte. NAPAS publishes the VietQR specification on vietqr.net, but we couldn't download it to test against, so we don't offer a VietQR generator yet.

For now, use your banking app. If you need a payment QR code for another country, see how payment QR codes work for the schemes we do support, such as KHQR in Cambodia and DuitNow in Malaysia.

Questions

Is there a free VietQR code generator?

Your banking app is the safest one: it makes a VietQR code for your own account, with or without an amount. We don't offer a VietQR generator yet, because we couldn't test one against NAPAS's published examples.

Can foreigners pay with VietQR?

Through VietQRGlobal, NAPAS says visitors can pay at accepting shops with a bank or e-wallet app from their own country. In October 2026 NAPAS listed Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, China, Singapore and South Korea.

How much can I send with VietQR?

VietQR transfers run on NAPAS 247, which NAPAS lists as up to under 500 million dong per transaction. Your bank may set a lower daily limit.

Is vietqr.net the official site?

NAPAS's own pages link to vietqr.net for VietQR. Other sites with VietQR in their name, such as API or payment-link services, are run by other companies.
