WhatsApp link for Instagram

To put WhatsApp on Instagram, make a wa.me link with your number, then paste it into your profile under Edit profile → Links. People who tap it in your bio go straight to a chat with you, with your opening message already typed.

The tool below starts with the message "Hi, I found you on Instagram." Change it if you like, add your number with the country code, and copy the link.

The link looks like https://wa.me/447700900123?text=Hi%2C%20I%20found%20you%20on%20Instagram. That format comes from WhatsApp's click-to-chat help page. The message tells you which chats came from Instagram, which is useful once you share the link in other places too.

Step 2: add it to your Instagram bio

In the Instagram app:

  1. Go to your profile and tap Edit profile.
  2. Tap Links, then Add external link.
  3. Paste your wa.me link in the URL field. Give it a title, such as "WhatsApp".
  4. Tap Done (on Android, the tick) to save.

The link shows under your bio. Open your profile from another account, or log out and visit it, and tap the link to check that the right chat opens.

Add it to a story

Stories take links through the link sticker. Instagram's help page explains that people who tap a link sticker go to the linked website, so a wa.me link opens WhatsApp. Our guide on how to add a link to an Instagram story has the steps for iPhone and Android.

A story with "Message me on WhatsApp" and the sticker works well for limited offers, bookings or questions after a live session.

The WhatsApp button on business profiles

Professional accounts (business or creator) can also show a contact button on the profile. Look for contact options in Edit profile, where you can connect a WhatsApp number. That button opens a chat with you but can't carry a pre-filled message, so many businesses use both: the button for quick contact and the bio link for a chat that says where it came from.

Instagram opens links in its own browser first. On the wa.me page, tap the button to continue to the chat. If it still fails:

  • Check the number. It needs the country code and no leading 0, plus sign, spaces or dashes. wa.me/447700900123 works; wa.me/+44 07700 900123 doesn't.
  • Check the account. The number must have an active WhatsApp account.
  • Check the message. Symbols like & and # must be encoded. Copy the link from the generator rather than typing it by hand.

Our guide to a WhatsApp link that isn't working covers more cases.

If you want WhatsApp next to your shop, your booking page and your other socials, a single link page keeps them together. A Liite page holds a WhatsApp button among your other links and counts the taps on each. Put that page's address in your Instagram bio instead of the wa.me link.

Questions

Can I put a WhatsApp link in an Instagram post caption?

You can type it, but Instagram doesn't make links in captions clickable. Put the link in your bio or in a link sticker on a story instead, and point to it from the caption.

Why does my WhatsApp link open a web page instead of the app?

Instagram opens links in its own browser. The wa.me page there has a button to continue to WhatsApp; tap it. If the chat still doesn't open, check that WhatsApp is installed and the number in the link has the country code.

Do I need a business account?

No. Any Instagram account can add a link to its bio and use the link sticker. The WhatsApp contact button on the profile is part of the professional account settings.
