What the limit covers

The 650 words are for the personal essay you write in response to one of the seven Common App prompts for 2026–2027. The seventh prompt lets you write on any topic. Colleges' supplemental essays and the "additional information" section have their own limits, which you'll see next to each question in the application.

How words are counted

Paste your essay into the application box before the deadline to see its own count, because that's the one that decides. Word processors and online counters can disagree by a few words:

  • Hyphenated words such as "well-known" count as one word in most tools.
  • Numbers count as words: "1,000" is one word, "10 percent" is two.
  • Dashes with spaces round them count as a word in some tools but not others.

Aim to finish a few words under 650 rather than at exactly 650, so a different count can't push you over.

Cutting to 650

If you're over:

  1. Look at the longest sentence (the counter shows it under the counts). Long sentences often hide two ideas; split them or drop the weaker one.
  2. Cut the opening. Many drafts take a paragraph to get going. Start where the story starts.
  3. Remove words that hedge: "really", "very", "kind of", "I think that".
  4. Check the most used words. If one word appears far more than the rest, swap some for specifics or cut them.

If you're well under

There's no rule that you must use all 650 words. Admissions readers want a clear, specific essay. If yours is 450 words and complete, it's complete. If it feels thin, add one concrete example rather than more explanation.
