Word count for a personal statement

A UCAS personal statement isn't limited in words. It's limited to 4,000 characters, including spaces, shared across three questions, and each answer needs at least 350 characters. The counter on this page is set to the 4,000-character limit and shows the word count next to it.

The UCAS format

The UCAS personal statement is now three answers rather than one essay. Each answer box has a minimum of 350 characters and there's an overall character counter. The 4,000-character limit covers all three answers together, and you can split it however suits your course and experience.

Because the limit is in characters, how many words you can fit depends on your words. Short words and fewer spaces leave room for more. Paste each answer into the counter to see both numbers, then paste all three together to check the total.

Count it the way UCAS does

  • Spaces count, so use the Characters figure, not Without spaces.
  • Draft in a word processor if you like, but always paste the final text into the UCAS form before you submit. Its counter decides.

Other personal statements

Graduate programmes, scholarships, medical schools outside UCAS and job applications set their own limits, in words or characters. The limit is normally in the application instructions. If it's in words, change nothing: the counter's word count is right there. If it's in characters, use the characters figure.

Getting under the limit

If you're over, start with the longest sentence the counter shows, then cut phrases that repeat what your course choice already says, such as "I have always been interested in". The most used words list shows what you lean on.

Questions

How long is a UCAS personal statement?

Up to 4,000 characters including spaces, split across three questions. Each answer needs at least 350 characters.

Is 700 words too long for a personal statement?

For UCAS, check the characters instead of words. 700 words of average length is usually more than 4,000 characters, so paste it into the counter to see.

Is 400 words too short for a personal statement?

It depends on the limit. For UCAS, what matters is that each of the three answers has at least 350 characters and the total stays under 4,000.
