Short links

Private URL shortener

For a link only some people should use, add a password (Pro and up), a time window or a click limit to a Liite short link. Short links are never listed anywhere, so only people you send one to can find it.

Ways to keep a link to the right people

Each of these works on its own or together with the others.

  • Password (Pro and up): visitors type it before they're sent on. Link-preview bots in chat apps get the password page too.
  • Schedule: a start and end time. Before the start the link says "Not live yet"; after the end it says "Link expired".
  • Click limit: the link stops after a set number of people have used it. Each person's click is counted once, so no more than that many people get through.
  • A random code instead of a word: liite.co/x/k7m3qa is far harder to guess than liite.co/x/team.

What stays private, and what doesn't

Liite has no public list or search of short links, and only your workspace sees a link's click numbers. They're counted without cookies.

A short link protects the short address, not the page behind it. Anyone who already has the destination's own address can open it directly. If the page itself must be private, protect it where it lives.

Without a password, anyone who has the short link can follow it, including the preview bots of the apps it's pasted into.

Good uses

Sharing a recording with one class for a week, a sign-up form that should close after 50 people, a document link for a client that ends with the project, or a staff page you'd rather not have passed around.

A real example

A sample short link for a team's handbook, using a random code rather than a guessable word. The QR code is made the same way as in your dashboard; the address is an example, not a live link.

A sample link. The QR code is real and made the same way as in your dashboard; the click numbers are not.

Questions

Can I password protect a short link?
Yes, on Pro and Business. Free accounts can use a schedule or a click limit to keep a link short-lived instead.
Can people find my short links by searching?
Liite doesn't publish a list of short links, so a link is only found by people who have it. Pick a random code rather than a word if you don't want it guessed.
Does a private short link hide the destination?
No. Once someone is through, they're on the destination page and can see its address. The short link only controls who gets sent there and when.
Can I make a link work for only a few days?
Yes. Set a start and an end time. Outside that window, visitors see a short message instead of being sent on.
