How to censor images on Discord
Discord can hide a whole image behind a spoiler, but it can't blur or cover part of one. To spoiler an image, add it to your message and click the eye icon (Mark as Spoiler) before you send. Anyone can click to reveal it, so to hide a face, name or number for good, censor the image first with the tool on this page.

Mark an image as a spoiler
Discord's steps for attachments:
- Add the image to your message.
- Click the Mark as Spoiler eye icon on the attachment.
- Send the message. The image stays hidden until someone clicks it.
The same works for videos and other attachments. To hide a link, put two vertical bars on each side of the URL. Discord notes that server invite embeds can't be hidden with spoiler tags.
Spoiler text
- Highlight and click: select the text in the message box and click the eye icon.
- Markdown: wrap the text in two vertical bars on each side, like
||this||. This works on mobile too. - Slash command: type
/spoilerbefore your message. - iOS: select the text, then tap Mark as Spoiler in the menu.
Text inside a code block isn't hidden, even with spoiler bars around it.
Why a spoiler isn't censoring
A spoiler hides an image until someone chooses to look. It doesn't change the image:
- One click reveals it.
- People can switch spoiler hiding off. In User Settings, Text & Images, they can choose to show spoiler content on click, on servers they moderate, or always. Discord says this setting is only on the desktop and browser app.
That's fine for plot twists and jump scares. It isn't fine for a friend's face, a home address in a screenshot or someone's username you don't want to share.
Censor part of an image before you post
The tool below starts on Solid box with Areas I pick, the safest setting for screenshots:
- Choose the screenshot or photo.
- Drag a box over each name, avatar, message preview or number you want gone.
- Keep PNG for screenshots so the text you leave stays sharp, then download.
- Upload the downloaded copy to Discord. Add a spoiler on top if the rest of the image needs one.
Blur image
Open the full toolWant a softer look for faces? Switch to Blur or Pixelate. Keep the solid box for text: published research has read blurred and pixelated text back, and free tools exist that try. The censor image page explains which parts of a screenshot to check.
Things people forget to censor in screenshots
- Usernames and avatars in the member list and replies
- Server and channel names that identify a private group
- Notifications and message previews at the top of a phone screenshot
- Email addresses, phone numbers and links in messages
Your image is edited in your browser and isn't uploaded to us. Only the copy you choose to post goes to Discord.

What does ``` do in Discord?
