How to get cool Instagram fonts

Instagram has no font menu for your bio, name, captions or comments. To get cool fonts there, you paste in text made of styled Unicode characters, which a generator like the one on this page makes for you. Stories and Reels are different: their text tool has its own fonts built in.

Get cool fonts for your bio, name or captions

  1. Type your text into the generator on this page. A name or one short line works best.
  2. Scroll the styles. Script, Fraktur (blackletter), double-struck, small caps and wide text are the ones people usually mean by "cool".
  3. Press copy next to the style you like.
  4. In Instagram, open your profile, tap Edit profile, then tap Bio or Name. For a caption, start a post and tap the caption box.
  5. Paste, then save.
  6. Look at the result on your own phone. If you see empty boxes, your phone lacks those characters: pick another style.

Get more fonts in Stories and Reels

When you add text to a Story or a Reel, Instagram shows its own set of fonts above the keyboard. Tap through them to switch. These fonts only work inside that text tool: you can't copy them into your bio.

Why the "fonts" work anywhere

The bold, script and Fraktur letters come from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block of Unicode (U+1D400–U+1D7FF). Each one is a separate character, such as Mathematical Bold Capital A. Because they're characters, not formatting, they paste into any app that takes text.

Unicode made them for maths. Its report on mathematics says they are "not intended for use in non-technical text". That doesn't stop them working, but it explains the downsides below.

There's nothing to download

You might find "Instagram fonts" offered as a download. You don't need one. Instagram doesn't let you install font files, and the generator's styles are just text you copy. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.

Before you post

  • Screen readers. Accessible Social notes that not every screen reader can read these characters. Some skip them, and others read them as noise or in the wrong language. Keep important words plain.
  • Search. In Accessible Social's test, X's search couldn't find a word written in styled characters. Write your name plainly somewhere in your bio so people can find you.
  • Less is more. Style one line or one word. A fully styled bio is harder for everyone to read.

Questions

What fonts does Instagram use?

Instagram shows bios, names, captions and comments in its own app font, and you can't change it. The cool fonts you see on profiles are styled Unicode characters pasted in as text.

How do I get more fonts on Instagram?

For your bio, name and captions, copy styled text from a generator and paste it in. For Stories and Reels, use the fonts in Instagram's own text tool.

Are there secret Instagram fonts?

No. There's no hidden setting. The fonts people call secret are Unicode characters that look like styled letters, copied from a generator.

Can I download Instagram fonts?

There's nothing to download. The styles are characters, not font files, so you copy and paste them. Instagram doesn't let you install font files.
