301 redirect checker
Paste a URL to check whether its redirects are permanent 301s or temporary 302s. Every hop that isn't a 301 or 308 gets its own note, so a stray 302 can't hide in a chain.

301 redirect checker: what to know
This page starts the redirect checker for this case. For every option and how to use it, see the redirect checker.
301 or 302: how to tell
The status code is the only thing that tells them apart. Both send the browser to a new address, so a visitor sees no difference. Search engines do: a permanent redirect tells Google to show the new address in results, a temporary one tells it to keep the old one.
This page runs the redirect checker with permanent redirects as the goal. Each hop that answers 302, 303 or 307 is listed with its address, and the summary says how many of the redirects in the chain are permanent.
Where stray 302s come from
Many servers default to temporary. Apache's Redirect directive sends a 302 unless you say otherwise, and IIS's HTTP Redirect feature defaults to Found (302). Plugins, hosting panels and link shorteners make their own choices too. If a move is for good, set the code to 301 or 308 explicitly and check again.
A 302 is right when the old address will come back: a sale page that redirects for a week, or a login wall that sends you on and then back.
Questions
How do I check if a redirect is 301 or 302?
Paste the old address into the box above and press Check. Each hop shows its status code; anything that isn't a 301 or 308 is flagged as not permanent.
How do I check if a redirect is working?
Check the old address. A working redirect lists one or more hops and ends on your new page with a 200. A loop, an error code at the end or a hop to the wrong address means it needs fixing.
How can I check if a link is redirected?
Run it through the checker. If the first hop answers with a 3xx code and a new address, the link is redirected; if it answers 200 straight away, it isn't.
