That deletes it for good. If you only want to stop it appearing, or you're on your phone, read on.
Delete a signature on a computer
- Open Gmail.
- At the top right, click Settings, then See all settings.
- Under General, scroll to Signature.
- Click the signature you want to remove.
- Click Delete, then Delete to confirm.
- At the bottom, click Save Changes.
If you have more than one signature, repeat for each. If you send from several addresses with Send mail as, each address can have its own signature; pick the address from the drop-down above the signature box.
Stop it being added, but keep it
Gmail lets you choose a default signature for new emails and another for replies. Set both to no signature in the same Signature section and click Save Changes. When you want it on a single email, click Insert signature at the bottom of the compose window.
Remove it in the Gmail app
The Gmail app can have its own mobile signature, only used for emails you send from the app.
iPhone and iPad:
- Tap Menu, then Settings.
- Under Compose and Reply, tap Signature settings.
- Turn off Mobile Signature, then tap Back.
Android:
- Tap Menu, scroll down and tap Settings.
- Choose the account.
- Tap Mobile signature, clear the text and tap OK.
Google says that if you don't have a mobile signature, emails from the app use the signature you set up on your computer. So if a signature still appears on your phone after turning the mobile one off, delete the computer signature too.
About the two dashes
Google's troubleshooting page says Gmail separates your signature from the message body with two dashes, and may hide the signature behind three dots in sent messages. Its signature help doesn't describe a setting to remove the dashes, so if they bother you, delete the signature and type your sign-off by hand.
Replacing it with something better
If you're removing an old signature because it looks messy, make a new one rather than going without. Fill in the generator below, press Copy signature, paste it into the empty Signature box and click Save Changes.
