Black gradient background

This dark gradient fades from pure black to dark slate grey at 160°, with a little grain so the blend doesn't show steps. It suits dark-mode pages, title slides and phone lock screens.

Black gradient background: what to know

This page starts the background generator for this case. For every option and how to use it, see the background generator.

Why dark gradients need grain

Screens show fewer distinct shades near black, so a slow dark fade across a big area can break into visible bands. The light grain in this preset hides them. If you switch it off, check the PNG full screen before you use it.

Any light text works on this background. For a softer look, swap dark slate grey for a dark navy or deep purple and keep black at the other end.

Questions

What is a dark gradient background?

A gradient between black and another very dark colour, such as dark slate grey here. It looks less flat than solid black and keeps light text easy to read.

Can I make it pure black?

Set both colours to #000000 and turn the grain off. You'll get solid black as CSS or a PNG.
