Neutral gradient background

This neutral gradient moves from linen through wheat to tan, top to bottom. These earthy beige tones stay quiet behind photos and text, which is why they're popular for portfolios, shops and wedding pages.

Warm or cool neutrals

Beige, wheat and tan are warm neutrals. For a cooler neutral, swap them for greys such as gainsboro (#dcdcdc) and dark grey (#a9a9a9). Mixing warm and cool in one gradient tends to look dirty, so keep to one side. Black or dark brown text reads well across all three stops here.

Questions

What colours count as neutral?

Whites, greys, beiges, tans and browns: colours with little saturation that don't compete with what's in front of them.

Can I add grain for a paper look?

Yes. Set Grain to about 0.1 and the beige tones start to look like recycled paper or card.
