Instagram highlight cover maker

Make a set of highlight covers that match: pick an emoji, a few letters or your own icon for each one, choose the colours once, and download them all at the size Instagram expects.

Free, no sign-up. Runs in your browser. Nothing you type or upload is sent to us or stored.

Give your profile one place to send people

Highlights keep your best stories on your profile. A free Liite page does the same for your links: one address for your bio, with buttons, social icons and a theme that matches your covers.

How to use it

  1. Add a cover for each highlight and give it a name.
  2. Choose an emoji, up to three letters, or an icon image for each cover.
  3. Pick the background and icon colours for the whole set, and check everything sits inside the circle.
  4. Download one cover, or all of them as a zip, and add them to your highlights from your phone.

What size is a highlight cover

A highlight cover is a story image: 1080 × 1920 pixels, the shape of a phone screen. On your profile, Instagram shows only a circle from the middle of it, as wide as the image. Anything outside that circle is cut off in the little round thumbnail, so this tool keeps the icon or letters centred inside it. Turn on "Show the circle" to see the crop; the guide is never part of the download.

Making a set look like a set

Covers look best when only the icon changes. Use one background for all of them, one icon colour, and the same icon size, which is how the style settings here work. Pick colours from your brand or your feed; the colour palette generator can suggest ones that go together. Simple line icons in one colour work well; turn on recolouring and they take the icon colour you chose, so icons from different sources still match.

Short labels read better than long ones. Instagram shows the highlight's name under the circle, so the cover only needs a symbol: a plane for travel, a fork for food, a question mark for questions.

Adding covers to your highlights

Save the PNGs to your phone. On your profile, press and hold a highlight, choose Edit highlight, then Edit cover, and pick the image from your camera roll. You can also choose a cover while creating a new highlight. If the image looks off-centre, pinch to adjust it until the icon fills the circle evenly.

Everything is drawn in your browser. Icons and backgrounds you add aren't uploaded anywhere.

Questions

What size should Instagram highlight covers be?

1080 × 1920 pixels, the same as a story. Instagram crops the middle to a circle on your profile, so keep the icon in the centre.

Do I have to post the cover as a story first?

No. When you edit a highlight's cover you can pick any image from your camera roll, so it never appears in your stories.

Can I use my own icons?

Yes. Choose Icon image for a cover and pick a PNG or SVG. Transparent one-colour icons work best; turn on recolouring to give them your icon colour.

How many covers can I make at once?

Up to 12 in one set. Download them one at a time, or all together as a zip with numbered file names.

Why does my emoji look different on my phone?

Emoji are drawn with your device's emoji font. A cover made on a Mac uses Apple's emoji; one made on Windows uses Microsoft's. The PNG keeps whichever one you saw when you downloaded it.
