Color palette for drawing: what to know

Why a limited palette helps

Three hues are enough for a whole picture. Mixing everything from the same few colours keeps shadows, skin and background related, so the drawing hangs together. Triadic colours sit evenly around the wheel, which gives you warm and cool without clashing.

Value (light and dark) matters more than hue for reading a picture. Use the scale to plan your highlights from the 50–200 steps and your shadows from 800–950.

Screen colours and paint

The hex codes are exact for digital drawing apps. Paint mixes differently from light, and adding white or black to a paint can shift its hue as well as its lightness, so treat the codes as a guide when you mix real pigment.

Questions

What is a good color palette for drawing?

A limited one: three hues spaced around the colour wheel, each with a light and a dark value, plus a neutral. It's easier to mix and keeps the picture unified.

What is the 3 color palette rule?

A common teaching idea, not a formal rule: work from three colours, usually spaced around the wheel, and mix the rest from them. The triadic harmony in the tool gives you such a set from any base colour.
