Count unique words: what to know
This page starts the word counter for this case. For every option and how to use it, see the word counter.
What counts as a unique word
A unique word is a word you've used at least once, counted once however many times it appears. In "the cat sat on the mat", there are six words and five unique ones, because "the" appears twice.
The counter matches words exactly, ignoring capital letters. It doesn't reduce words to a root form, so plurals and verb endings count as separate words. That keeps the result predictable and easy to check by hand.
Using the count
Divide unique words by total words to see how varied your vocabulary is. Short texts score high, because there's little room to repeat yourself, so only compare texts of similar length.
The most used words list shows which words you repeat. Common words such as "the" and "and" are left out of that list, but they still count towards the unique total.
Questions
What are considered unique words?
Each different word in your text, counted once. Capital letters are ignored, but different forms of a word, such as "run" and "running", count separately.
Does it count "The" and "the" as the same word?
Yes. Case is ignored, so both count as one unique word.
