Character counter
Paste or type your text to count characters, words and lines as you go. Pick a platform to see how much of its limit you've used and how much room is left.
Free, no sign-up. Runs in your browser. Nothing you type or upload is sent to us or stored.
Your bio has room for one link. Make it count.
Point that link at a Liite page and fit everything else there: all your links, a WhatsApp button, social icons and a longer bio, at liite.co/yourname.
How to use it
- Type or paste your text in the box.
- Pick the platform you're writing for, such as Instagram bio or X post.
- Watch the count and the space left. Over the limit, the count turns red so you know what to trim.
Why counts differ between tools
Computers store text in units that don't always match what you see. An emoji like a family or a flag is made of several hidden parts joined together, so a naive counter might call one emoji 7 or 11 characters. This counter splits text the way your phone shows it, so one emoji, one flag or one accented letter counts as one.
Some platforms weigh characters differently. X counts every link as 23 characters, whatever its real length, and counts emoji and characters from scripts such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean as two. The X count here follows those rules closely but isn't identical to X's own, so leave a little room.
SMS is counted in messages
A text message holds 160 characters when it only uses the basic GSM alphabet. One emoji or a letter outside that alphabet switches the whole message to Unicode, which holds 70. Longer texts are split into parts of 153 or 67 characters, and each part may be billed as a message. The SMS preset shows the encoding and how many parts your text needs.
Writing within the limit
Lead with what you do and who it's for, then cut filler words. Line breaks count as characters too, so a bio with five short lines uses a few more than one long line. For a meta description, keep the important words in the first 150 characters: Google trims by width, so wide letters run out sooner.
Limits change from time to time. The ones here were checked in October 2026; if a platform rejects your text, its own counter has the final say.

Questions
How many characters can an Instagram bio have?
150 characters, as of October 2026. Emoji count as one character each, and line breaks count too.
How long can a post on X be?
280 characters on a free account. Links always count as 23, and emoji and many non-Latin characters count as 2.
Do spaces count as characters?
Yes, on every platform listed here. The counter also shows the count without spaces if you need it for something else.
Why does one emoji count as more than one character elsewhere?
Many emoji are several code points glued together. Tools that count code points or bytes see the parts; this counter counts what you see on screen.
Is my text stored?
No. The counting happens in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
