VCF file generator: what to know

What a VCF file is
VCF stands for vCard file. It's plain text in a fixed layout: a BEGIN:VCARD line, a VERSION line, then one line per detail, such as FN for the display name, TEL for a phone number and EMAIL for an address, and finally END:VCARD. Because the layout is a public standard, almost every contacts app can read it.
The file this page makes holds one contact. Files exported from a phone or from Google Contacts often hold hundreds, one after another in the same file. Both are valid VCF files.
Not the genomics VCF
Scientists use the same three letters for the Variant Call Format, a text format for genetic variant data maintained by the hts-specs project. It has nothing to do with contacts. If your .vcf file starts with ##fileformat=VCFv4 rather than BEGIN:VCARD, it's genomic data and a contacts app won't open it.
How to use the file
Attach the .vcf to an email or send it in a chat. On an iPhone, tapping the attachment offers to add the contact. On Android, the Contacts app imports it from Organize, then Import from file. On a Mac, double-click it.
You can open the file in any text editor to check it. Don't add a photo by hand: the photo is stored as a long block of encoded text, and this maker adds it for you if you upload one.
Questions
How do I create a VCF contact file?
Type the contact's name and any other details above, then click Contact card (.vcf). The file downloads straight away and is made in your browser.
What does a .VCF file do?
It carries one or more contacts in a standard format. Opening it in a contacts app adds those people, with each detail in the right field.
How do I open a VCF file?
Double-click it on a Mac, open it in Outlook on Windows, tap it as an attachment on an iPhone, or import it in Google Contacts. Our guide on opening VCF files has the steps for each.
How do I convert a VCF file to contacts?
You don't need to convert it. Import it: Google Contacts, iCloud.com and Apple Contacts on Mac all take a .vcf file and add every contact in it.
