What counts towards a caption
Everything you type is part of the caption: words, spaces, line breaks, emoji, hashtags and @mentions. A block of 20 hashtags at the end can take a few hundred characters on its own, so count them before you decide how long the story above them can be.
The page opens on the caption limit. The list under the counts shows the same text against the Instagram bio, Threads and the other platforms, which helps when you post one caption in several places.
Write the first line for the feed
In the feed, Instagram shows only the start of a long caption and hides the rest behind "more". Put the point of the post in the first line, and leave hashtags and credits for the end, where cutting them off costs nothing.
If you paste a caption from a notes app and the line breaks disappear, add them again in the app before posting. The count here includes them either way.
Questions
What is the Instagram character count for captions?
Captions can be up to 2,200 characters, checked in October 2026. The count includes spaces, line breaks, emoji and hashtags.
How do I post more than 2,200 characters on Instagram?
You can't in one caption. Move the extra detail into a carousel slide, a comment or a link in your bio, and keep the caption to the main point.
What characters can I use on Instagram?
Letters from any language, numbers, punctuation and emoji all work. Styled letters from a fonts generator are Unicode symbols, so they work too, but some screen readers read them oddly.
