At a glance
- How the next number is made
- The last group of digits goes up by one and keeps its zero padding: INV-0099 becomes INV-0100, 2026-0001 becomes 2026-0002, and a number with no digits gets -2 added.
- checked 2026-11
- UK and EU: sequential
- HMRC asks for a sequential number based on one or more series that uniquely identifies the invoice. The European Commission asks for a unique sequential number.

Invoice number generator: what to know
This page starts the invoice generator for this case. For every option and how to use it, see the invoice generator.
Pick a format you can keep
Any format works as long as each number is used once and they run in order. Common choices: a plain counter with zero padding (0001), a prefix (INV-0001), or the year and a counter (2026-0001), which starts again each year. Padding to four digits keeps the numbers sorting properly in folders and spreadsheets.
You can run more than one series, for example one per client (ACME-001) or one per branch. Keep each series in order, and don't reuse a number, even for an invoice you cancelled.
Why not random numbers?
Random invoice numbers are easy to make but hard to check. Sequential numbers show at a glance whether an invoice is missing, and tax authorities that set rules, such as HMRC and the EU, ask for a sequence.
Questions
Can I create my own invoice number?
Yes. You choose the format. What matters is that every number is unique and they follow a sequence.
How do I create my first invoice number?
Pick a format and start at 1, for example INV-0001 or 2026-0001. Some businesses start at a higher number such as 1001; that's fine as long as you carry on in order from there.
Does the tool remember my last number?
Yes, in this browser. Your draft, including the number, is saved locally, so next time it's there. On another device, type your last number and carry on.
