Compare two documents for similarities: what to know
This page starts the text diff for this case. For every option and how to use it, see the text diff.
How the similarity score works
The tool lines both texts up word by word and finds the longest run of words they share in the same order. The score is twice that number divided by the words in both texts. Two copies of the same text score 100%. Two texts with no words in common score 0%.
Order matters. If one document says the same things in a different order, the score is lower than a simple list of shared words would suggest. That is deliberate: it measures how close the wording is, not whether the topics match.
What a score tells you
There's no universal cut-off. Two versions of the same contract usually score in the high 90s. A rewrite that keeps the structure but changes the wording lands much lower. Common words such as "the" and "and" match too, so even unrelated texts rarely score zero.
For long texts the tool counts shared words without their order, to keep your browser responsive, and says so next to the score.
Questions
How do I compare two documents for similarities?
Copy the text out of each document and paste one into each box. The score appears above the result, and the words the two share are shown in context.
Does it understand meaning?
No. It compares wording, not ideas. Two texts that say the same thing in different words score low.
Can I upload Word files?
No. Open a file works for plain text, such as .txt or .md files. For a Word document, copy its text and paste it in.
