How to use it

  1. Paste the original text in the first box.
  2. Paste the changed text in the second box.
  3. Read the differences, and turn on ignore case or ignore whitespace if those changes don't matter to you.

Reading the result

The comparison goes line by line. Lines that only appear in the changed text are marked as added, with a plus sign, and lines that only appear in the original are marked as removed, with a minus sign. Lines that are the same in both are shown as unchanged, so you can see each change in context.

When a line was edited rather than replaced, the words that changed inside it are highlighted. That makes a single swapped word or a changed number easy to spot in a long paragraph. A summary at the top counts the added, removed and unchanged lines.

Ignoring changes that don't matter

Ignore case treats "Invoice" and "invoice" as the same, which helps when someone has changed capitalisation throughout but you only care about the wording. Ignore whitespace overlooks extra spaces, tabs and trailing spaces, so reformatted text doesn't show up as changed on every line.

If every line shows as changed when you expect only a few edits, the line breaks are probably different. Text copied from a PDF or email is often wrapped differently from the original. Run both versions through the remove line breaks tool with the same settings, then compare again.

What people compare

Check a contract or terms someone sent back to see exactly what they changed before you sign. Compare two drafts of an article, a cover letter or a product description after an edit. Look at two versions of a configuration file or a code snippet to find the line that differs.

For very large texts the tool falls back to a simpler comparison so your browser stays responsive. It still shows what's different, but it may mark a larger block as changed where a full comparison would have matched more lines.

Private by design

The comparison runs in your browser. Neither text is sent to us or saved, so it's fine to compare drafts and documents you'd rather keep to yourself.

Questions

How do I compare two texts for differences?

Paste the original in the first box and the new version in the second. Added lines are marked with a plus, removed lines with a minus, and changed words are highlighted.

Can it ignore capital letters or extra spaces?

Yes. Turn on ignore case, ignore whitespace, or both, and those differences won't count as changes.

Why does every line show as changed?

Usually the line breaks differ, for example after copying from a PDF. Remove the line breaks from both texts the same way, then compare again.

Can I compare code with it?

Yes, for snippets and small files. It compares plain text line by line, so it works for code and configuration files as well as prose.

Are my texts stored?

No. Both texts stay in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
