Compare two texts for plagiarism: what to know

This page starts the text diff for this case. For every option and how to use it, see the text diff.

What this check can and can't do

This is a side-by-side check. It tells you how much wording one text shares with another text you already have, such as a student essay and the article it may have drawn on, or your blog post and a page that looks suspiciously like it.

It doesn't search the web, journals or other students' work, so it can't find copying from a source you haven't pasted. It also can't spot paraphrasing that changes most of the words, or tell quoted and referenced text from copied text. Read the highlighted passages before you draw any conclusion.

Reading the result

Highlighted words in the second text also appear, in the same order, in the source. The list below shows each shared run of 6 words or more. Short matches like "in the first place" are normal in any two texts on the same subject; long runs are worth a closer look.

The similarity score above the result gives an overall figure. Use it to compare several suspect texts against one source, not as proof on its own.

Questions

Is this a plagiarism checker?

It's a comparison tool. It shows which wording two texts share, but it doesn't search any database or the web.

Are the texts I paste stored?

No. Both texts stay in your browser and nothing is sent to us, so it's safe for unpublished work.
