Instagram engagement rate calculator: what to know

Worked example with sample numbers
The calculator opens with made-up numbers for an account with 8,000 followers. Its last 10 posts got 3,200 likes, 150 comments, 90 shares and 160 saves: 3,600 interactions, or 360 per post.
By followers: 360 ÷ 8,000 × 100 = 4.5%. By reach: 3,600 ÷ 25,000 × 100 = 14.4%. By views: 3,600 ÷ 40,000 × 100 = 9%. Same posts, three different rates, because each one divides by a different number.
Views, not impressions, on newer posts
Meta's insights reference marks impressions as deprecated for posts made after 2 July 2024. Use views in the "Impressions or views" box instead. Reach counts each account once, while views are a running total, so the rate by views usually comes out lower than the rate by reach.
Checking your Instagram engagement rate
Reach, views, shares and saves are only in the account owner's insights. For your own account, take the numbers for each post from its insights and add them up. For someone else's account you only see likes and comments, so the rate by followers is the only one you can work out.
Questions
How do I calculate my Instagram engagement rate?
Add up likes, comments, shares and saves across a few recent posts. Divide by the number of posts, then by your followers, and multiply by 100. For the rate by reach, divide the total interactions by the total reach of the same posts instead.
Is a 4% or 7% engagement rate good on Instagram?
It depends on which formula gave you the number, your account size and your niche, so there's no single cut-off. We don't publish a benchmark. The fairest test is your own rate over time, using the same formula and the same number of posts each month.
Should I count saves and shares?
Instagram's own total-interactions figure includes them, so counting them matches what Meta reports. If you're comparing with someone who only counts likes and comments, leave them at zero and say so.
