Wedding color palette: what to know

This page starts the colour palette generator for this case. For every option and how to use it, see the colour palette generator.

Which colours can you print text in

Invitations, menus and signs need text people can read in candlelight. On ivory (#fffff0), dark olive green reads at 5.89:1, comfortably above AA. Dusty rose (#bc8f8f) is 2.78:1 and goldenrod 2.21:1: keep those for borders, monograms and large names, not the small print.

If your main colour is light, use step 800 or 900 of its scale for text. It keeps the same hue, so the stationery still matches.

Screen colours and printed colours

Hex codes describe colours on a screen. Card stock, ink and fabric all shift them, so ask your printer for a proof, and take a printed swatch when you choose flowers or linens. The hex codes still help everyone start from the same colour.

A small set of colours, usually three to five, used across invitations, flowers, outfits, decor and signs so everything looks planned together.

There's no single best one. A practical recipe: one main colour, one or two softer partners, a neutral such as ivory or white, and one dark colour that stays readable as text.

What are the 7 color schemes?

Lists vary, but the common schemes are monochromatic, analogous, complementary, split complementary, triadic, tetradic and achromatic. The tool covers the first five.
