YouTube thumbnail in HD: what to know
This page starts the YouTube thumbnail downloader for this case. For every option and how to use it, see the YouTube thumbnail downloader.
Why HD stops at 1280×720
YouTube asks creators to upload thumbnails at 3840×2160, but the public image server only hands out copies. The biggest copy is 1280×720. No downloader can get you the 4K original from YouTube, because it isn't published. If you need the full-size file for your own video, use the image you uploaded.
1280×720 is still 16:9 and twice the 640-pixel minimum width, so it works as a preview image on a website, in a slide or in a portfolio.
When a video has no HD thumbnail
Some videos have no maxresdefault file, and old ones may lack the 640×480 size too. For a missing size YouTube answers with a 404 and a small 120×90 grey placeholder. The tool spots the placeholder, greys out that size and turns its download button off, so you don't save the placeholder by mistake. Take the largest size that's left.
If it's your own video and the HD size is missing, upload a custom thumbnail at 1280×720 or larger. Changes can take a while to show.
Questions
How do I download a YouTube thumbnail in HD?
Paste the video's link above. The HD size, 1280×720, is listed first. Click its download button, or copy its direct link.
Can I get a YouTube thumbnail in 1920×1080 or 4K?
Not from YouTube. The largest copy its image server offers is 1280×720, whatever size was uploaded. Only the creator has the original file.
Why is the HD download greyed out?
That video has no 1280×720 thumbnail, so YouTube sends a 120×90 placeholder instead. Use the largest size that isn't greyed out.
