Questions
What must a Canadian GST/HST invoice show?
The Input Tax Credit Information (GST/HST) Regulations set the details a customer needs to claim the tax back. For a total of $500 or more: your name or business name and GST/HST registration number, the invoice date, the total, the GST/HST charged (or a statement that it's included), the buyer's name, the terms of payment, and a description of each supply.
What about smaller invoices?
Under $100, the regulations ask for your name, the date and the total. From $100 to $499.99, add your GST/HST number and the tax charged or included.
What's the GST rate?
The Excise Tax Act sets GST at 5%. Provinces with HST charge a higher combined rate instead, and some provinces add their own sales tax, so set the rate for where you make the sale.
