What's included
- "Tax invoice" as the heading, which Inland Revenue says you can keep using
- Your name and GST number, and the invoice date
- A description of the services
- The GST-exclusive amount, the GST and the GST-inclusive total
- The buyer's name and an identifier (here an address and email), needed when the sale is over $1,000
How to change it
- Replace the sample GST number under your business name with yours.
- For sales of $200 or less, Inland Revenue asks for less: your name, the date, a description and the amount. You can still use this layout.
- If you're not GST registered, change the heading to "Invoice" and clear the GST.
Questions
What does a New Zealand tax invoice need?
Inland Revenue calls it taxable supply information. For sales over $1,000 it lists your name or trade name, your GST number, the invoice date, a description, either the GST-exclusive amount, GST and GST-inclusive amount or the inclusive amount with a GST statement, and the buyer's name with an identifier such as an address, phone, email or NZBN.
Can I still call it a tax invoice?
Yes. Since 1 April 2023 the law speaks of taxable supply information, but Inland Revenue says you don't need to change the wording and can keep using a document marked "tax invoice".
What's the GST rate in New Zealand?
Inland Revenue says registered businesses charge GST at 15% on most taxable supplies. Some supplies are zero-rated or exempt.
When must I give one?
Inland Revenue says you must provide taxable supply information to a GST-registered buyer within 28 days of a request, for supplies over $200.
