Image files or the SVG trick?
You may have seen an emoji favicon made with one line of HTML: an SVG with the emoji as text, placed straight in the link tag. It's handy for a quick test, but the emoji is drawn by each visitor's own font, and SVG isn't one of the formats Google lists for favicons in search results.
The files from this tool are plain PNG and ICO images. The emoji is frozen as it looked when you made it, and every browser, phone and search engine reads it the same way.
Making an emoji readable at 16 pixels
Emoji with one bold shape, like a rocket, a heart or a lightning bolt, still read at tab size. Faces and busy scenes turn into a blob. Check the tab preview before you download.
A transparent background looks clean in light and dark browser themes. If your emoji is pale, turn the background on and pick a darker colour so it stands out.

How do I use an emoji as a favicon?
Pick Emoji, paste the one you want, then download the zip. Put the files in your site's root folder and paste the tags from the tool into your page's head.
Why does my emoji look different from the one on my phone?
Each system draws emoji its own way. The files use the design of the device you make them on, and visitors see that same image.
Can I put an emoji on a coloured background?
Yes. Untick Transparent background and choose a colour and a shape: square, rounded or circle.
