Favicon generator from text: what to know

This page starts the favicon generator for this case. For every option and how to use it, see the favicon generator.

Picking the letters

A text favicon is usually your initial, your initials or the first letter of your brand. At 16 pixels a single capital is the clearest; two letters work if they're short and wide, like "Jo" or "AB". Three or four letters shrink until they're hard to read in a tab, so save those for a big icon.

Heavy weights survive small sizes better than regular ones, because thin strokes fade into the background. Check the 16 px preview and the 32 px one next to it before you download.

Colours that hold up small

Pick a dark letter on a light background or the other way round. Two colours of similar brightness, like red on green, blur together at tab size. Your background colour also goes into the manifest as the theme colour, so choose one that matches your site.

The letters are drawn in this site's sans-serif font as your browser shows it, then saved as images, so they look the same for everyone who visits.

Questions

Which font is used for the letters?

The sans-serif font this site uses, as your browser draws it. The result is saved as images, so visitors don't need the font.

Can I use a word instead of letters?

Up to four characters fit. Longer words get too small to read at 16 pixels, so use your initials or the first letter.
