kebab-case converter
kebab-case writes every word in lowercase and joins them with hyphens: summer-sale, product-card. Paste a page title or a list of names and copy the hyphenated version for a URL, CSS class or file name.

At a glance
- URLs (Google Search)
- Google recommends hyphens rather than underscores between words in URLs, because they help people and search engines pick out the words
- Source: developers.google.com, checked 2026-11
- CSS class names (Google style)
- Separate words in class names with a hyphen, as in .video-id
- Source: google.github.io, checked 2026-11
- npm package names
- New packages must not have uppercase letters in the name, because the name becomes part of a URL, a command-line argument and a folder name
- Source: docs.npmjs.com, checked 2026-11
- Punctuation and accents here
- Anything that isn't a letter or digit becomes a word break, and accents are removed, so "Café opening hours" becomes cafe-opening-hours

kebab-case converter: what to know
This page starts the case converter for this case. For every option and how to use it, see the case converter.
Making URL slugs
Paste a page or post title and copy the kebab-case line as its slug. "Summer Sale: 20% Off Everything" becomes summer-sale-20-off-everything: the colon and percent sign go, and every word is lowercase. Shorten it afterwards if you like; a slug doesn't need every word of the title.
Google says non-English words in URLs are fine when they're UTF-8 encoded. This tool removes accents anyway, so if you want café in the address, type it back in.
CSS and file names
Paste camelCase names from a design file or component list and copy them as CSS classes or file names: productCard becomes product-card. Each line converts on its own, so a whole list takes one paste.
Questions
Why is it called kebab-case?
The hyphens look like a skewer running through the words. Some people call it dash case or spinal case.
Should I use hyphens or underscores in URLs?
Hyphens. Google's URL guidelines recommend hyphens over underscores to separate words, because they make the words easier to identify.
Can I use kebab-case for variable names?
Not in most languages, which read the hyphen as a minus sign. Use camelCase or snake_case there; both are in the results.
