Title case converter: what to know

This page starts the case converter for this case. For every option and how to use it, see the case converter.

Where this differs from APA

APA also lowercases "so", "yet", "off" and "up" when they're minor words. This tool capitalises them, because "up" in "Set Up Your Account" is part of the verb and should keep its capital. Check those four by hand if you follow APA closely.

In hyphenated words this tool capitalises every part, so "step-by-step" becomes "Step-By-Step". APA only capitalises the parts that are major words, which gives "Step-by-Step". The same applies to "one-on-one" and "face-to-face".

Other style guides

Chicago, AP and MLA each publish their own title case rules, and they don't agree on every word, especially longer prepositions such as "about" or "between". If your school, publisher or newsroom names a guide, check a few words against it after converting.

Whatever the guide, names and brands keep their own spelling. Fix "Iphone" back to "iPhone" before you publish.

Questions

Which words are not capitalised in title case?

Articles (a, an, the) and short conjunctions and prepositions such as and, but, or, of, in, on and to. APA keeps them lowercase when they're three letters or fewer, unless they start the title or follow a colon.

Is "with" capitalised in a title?

In APA style, yes. APA capitalises every word of four letters or more, so "With", "From" and "Into" all get a capital.

What's the difference between title case and Capitalise Each Word?

Capitalise Each Word gives every word a capital, small words included. Title case keeps the small words lowercase in the middle. Both appear in the results, so you can copy either.
