What this tool capitalises
The first letter of the text and the first letter after a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or line break, plus the word "I"
What it can't know
Names, places and brands are made lowercase like every other word, so "LONDON" becomes "london". Put their capitals back after converting

From capitals to sentence case

Text typed with Caps Lock on, or copied from a heading in capitals, is hard to read in a paragraph. Paste it here and the first result turns it back into normal sentences. Then read it once for names: the tool lowercases "PARIS" and "JANE" because it can't tell them from ordinary words.

Abbreviations with full stops can trip it up as well. "Approx. ten people" becomes "Approx. Ten people", because a full stop followed by a space looks like the end of a sentence.

Sentence case or title case?

APA style uses both. Paper titles and headings use title case. Reference list entries use sentence case for article and book titles, with a capital after a colon for the subtitle. This tool doesn't add that capital after a colon, so fix the subtitle's first word by hand.

If you don't follow a style guide, pick one style and use it for every heading on the page. Mixing the two is what readers notice.

Questions

What is a sentence case example?

"The effects of sleep on memory: A review" is a reference list title in APA sentence case. Only the first word, the first word after the colon and any names get a capital.

What is the difference between sentence case and toggle case?

Sentence case capitalises the start of each sentence. Toggle case, which this tool calls iNVERSE, flips every letter, so "Hello" becomes "hELLO". It's mostly used to fix text typed with Caps Lock on.

Is sentence case the same as camel case?

No. Sentence case is for writing and keeps the spaces. camelCase is for code: it removes the spaces and capitalises each word after the first, as in "orderTotal".

What's the difference between uppercase and lowercase?

Uppercase letters are capitals (A, B, C) and lowercase letters are the small forms (a, b, c). Sentence case mixes the two: lowercase for most words, with a capital at the start of each sentence and on names. This tool converts between all three: paste your text and pick UPPERCASE, lowercase or Sentence case.
