snake_case writes every word in lowercase and joins them with underscores: order_total, created_at. Paste names in any style, one per line, and copy the snake_case or CONSTANT_CASE version.

Acronyms are lowercased, as in is_xid_start

How camelCase is split here
A capital after a lowercase letter or digit starts a new word, and a run of capitals ends before the last one, so parseHTTPResponse becomes parse_http_response

snake_case converter: what to know

This page starts the case converter for this case. For every option and how to use it, see the case converter.

camelCase to snake_case

Paste camelCase or PascalCase names from JavaScript or Java and copy them in snake_case for Python, Rust or a database column. orderTotal becomes order_total, and CreatedAt becomes created_at. Each line converts on its own, so a whole list of fields takes one paste.

CONSTANT_CASE is the same words in capitals, which PEP 8 and Rust both use for constants. Rust calls it SCREAMING_SNAKE_CASE.

Things to check

Numbers stay with the word before them unless there's a break: "line 2" gives line_2, but line2 stays line2. Rust's guide also asks you not to split single letters off as their own word (btree_map, not b_tree_map), so look over names that start with one capital letter.

Questions

What is snake_case used for?

Function and variable names in Python and Rust, and many database column names. Words are lowercase and joined by underscores.

What's the difference between snake_case and kebab-case?

snake_case joins words with underscores (order_total); kebab-case uses hyphens (order-total). Most programming languages read a hyphen as a minus sign, so kebab-case is used in URLs, CSS and file names instead.

What is SCREAMING_SNAKE_CASE?

snake_case in capitals, used for constants such as MAX_RETRIES. This tool calls it CONSTANT_CASE.
