WhatsApp link preview

Paste a link to see roughly how its WhatsApp preview will look before you send it: the small card with an image, title and short description, and the tags behind it.

WhatsApp link preview: what to know

This page starts the link preview checker for this case. For every option and how to use it, see the link preview checker.

What a WhatsApp link preview is

When you paste a link into a chat, WhatsApp fetches the page and shows a small card above your message with a picture, a title and a line of description. The person you send it to sees the same card. It comes from the page's Open Graph tags, so it's the site owner who decides what it shows, not the sender.

This checker reads those tags the same way and draws an approximate WhatsApp card first, then the other apps. WhatsApp changes its design from time to time, so treat the card as a close guide.

When there's no preview

If no card appears for any link you send, check WhatsApp's Disable link previews setting under Settings → Privacy → Advanced: when it's on, the links you send get no preview. It's off unless you turned it on. If only one site has no card, the page usually has no og:image or og:title, the image address is relative or broken, or the site blocks crawlers. Check the address above: each problem is listed with what to change.

Questions

What is a link preview on WhatsApp?

The card WhatsApp shows when a message contains a link: an image, a title and a short description taken from the page's Open Graph tags.

Why is there no link preview in WhatsApp?

If none of your links get one, Disable link previews may be on in Settings → Privacy → Advanced. If it's one site, the page is usually missing og:title or og:image, or the image can't be fetched. Paste the link above to see which.

How do I share a link with a preview on WhatsApp?

Paste the full address into the chat and wait a moment for the card to appear before you send. If it doesn't, the page's tags need fixing, which only the site owner can do.
