Fill the screen or keep the whole photo
A photo taken upright on a phone is usually 3:4, a little wider than a story. Fill crops a thin strip from the top and bottom, which is fine for most portraits. Use the crop sliders to keep heads and text in view.
A landscape or square photo loses a lot if it's cropped to 9:16. Fit on blur keeps the whole picture across the middle of the story and fills the space above and below with a blurred, enlarged copy, so the story still looks full-screen. Choose plain fit with a colour if you'd rather add text or stickers on a clean background.
Leave room for Instagram's buttons
Your name and profile picture sit at the top of a story, and the reply bar sits at the bottom. Keep faces, prices and any text you add away from the very top and bottom, so nothing important is covered.

How do I fit a whole picture in an Instagram story?
Use fit on blur or fit with a colour at 1080 × 1920. The whole photo is scaled to the story's width and the rest of the screen is filled, so Instagram has nothing to crop.
Why does Instagram zoom in on my story photo?
