Blur image background
Blur a photo's background by drawing boxes over the parts around your subject. The tool starts on a soft blur and only touches the boxes you draw, so the person in front stays sharp.

At a glance
- How this tool does it
- You draw rectangles over the background. It doesn't cut out the subject, so the blur has straight edges, and several smaller boxes fit around a person better than one big one.
- iPhone Portrait photos
- In Photos, the Depth Control slider changes the background blur of a Portrait mode photo after you've taken it.

- iPhone Photo mode
- On supported models, photos of a person, dog or cat taken in Photo mode can be turned into portraits in Photos afterwards.

- Google Photos
- Google Photos lists portrait blur among its editing features, but some features are only available on Pixel phones.

Blur image background: what to know
This page starts the blur image for this case. For every option and how to use it, see the blur image.
Getting a natural-looking result
Start with boxes along the top and sides of the picture, where the background usually is, and keep them clear of your subject's outline. Fill the gaps with smaller boxes. A strength of 30–50 softens a background without turning it into a smear.
If your phone took the photo in Portrait mode, its own background blur follows the outline of the person and will look smoother. Use this tool when the photo has no depth information, or when you want to hide something in the background, like a house number or a screen.
Questions
How do I blur the background on my phone?
On iPhone, open a Portrait mode photo in Photos, tap Edit, tap Portrait and drag the Depth Control slider. On Android, Google Photos offers portrait blur on some phones, including Pixel. For any other photo, use this tool in your phone's browser.
Can I blur the background of an iPhone photo after taking it?
Yes, if it's a Portrait mode photo, or a Photo mode picture of a person, dog or cat on a supported model. Otherwise, blur the background here by drawing boxes.
Does it detect the background automatically?
No. You draw the boxes yourself. That works well for hiding parts of a background, but it can't trace around hair the way a portrait mode can.
