Pixelate image
Choose a picture and it turns into big squares of colour straight away. Pixelate the whole picture, or switch to Areas I pick and drag a box over each part you want blocky.

At a glance
- Block size at this preset
- Strength 25 makes blocks 25 × 25 pixels when the image's long side is 1,200 pixels. Blocks grow with the image, so the look stays the same at any size.
- Pixelated text isn't safe
- Researchers recovered both short and long pixelated text with statistical models and concluded that mosaicing isn't a viable way to redact text.

Pixelate image: what to know
This page starts the blur image for this case. For every option and how to use it, see the blur image.
Choosing a block size
Low strength gives small blocks: the picture still reads as a photo, just rough. High strength gives a handful of large squares, where only the main colours survive. Move the slider and watch the preview until the shapes you want gone are gone.
For a retro pixel-art look, try a strength between 10 and 30 on the whole image. To hide something, go higher, and draw the box a little bigger than the thing you hide.
Pixelating text and ID numbers
Pixelation looks thorough, but text leaves a pattern in the blocks. Published research and free tools have read pixelated text back. For passwords, account numbers or addresses, switch to Solid box instead: it replaces the pixels completely.
Questions
What does it mean to pixelate an image?
To pixelate an image is to replace areas of it with large squares of a single colour, each the average of the pixels it covers. Details smaller than a square disappear. It's also called mosaicing.
Does pixelated mean blurry?
Not quite. A blur softens edges smoothly, while pixelation makes hard-edged squares. People also call a low-resolution photo pixelated when you can see its individual pixels.
Can I add grid lines between the pixels?
No. This tool makes the blocks but doesn't draw a grid over them. You can pick the block size with the strength slider.
How do I pixelate only part of a picture?
Choose Areas I pick, then drag a box over each part. Everything outside the boxes stays sharp.
